Common Sense Faith and Cult

Faith/Religions should provide hope for people who seek transcendent meanings and provisions beyond this material/worldly life. However, faith/religions can easily be subject to the evil, intentionally or not, manipulations of the leaders and institutions. Is it possible to practice a faith without falling into the trap of becoming victim, or even worse, part of a cult?
